What does an electrical apprentice do?

As an apprentice electrician you may find yourself working on the following projects:

  • domestic – wiring houses and installation of electrical equipment
  • commercial – wiring and installation of electrical equipment to offices, shopping centres, and other businesses.
  • industrial – maintenance and installation of electrical services to public sites/utilities or in power generation stations

At the completion of your apprenticeship with AGA, you will also need to sit your ‘A Grade’ examination with the Chief Electrical Inspector in order to become a registered electrician. This exam is conducted externally but you will receive training and preparation from AGA.

    UEE30820 – Certificate III in Electrotechnology

    This is the official trade qualification for electricians in Australia. It is a nationally recognised qualification which means that it is valid in all states of Australia. The qualification requires both on-the-job and structured (trade school) off-the-job training.

    Duration

    An electrical apprenticeship takes 4 years to complete, and to be registered also requires an external examination with the Chief Electrical Inspector after completing your apprenticeship.

  • Pre-apprenticeships

    Increase your chances of becoming an electrical apprentice

    Electrical is a very popular trade – the salary is good, employment prospects in Australia are strong and each year AGA receives many more applications than it has available positions. Having completed a pre-apprenticeship and done relevant work experience greatly improves your chances of getting an apprenticeship.

    UEE22020 – Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start)

    This pre-vocational course is aimed at school leavers or new entrants into the workforce. It provides the opportunity for those wishing to gain employment in the electrotechnology industry with the required prerequisite knowledge and skills to gain access to a wide range of apprenticeships offered within this industry.

    Duration

    A Certificate II in Electrotechnology takes approximately 12 weeks to complete.

  • School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT)

    School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT) allow you to continue at secondary school, completing VCE or VCAL while gaining qualifications to kick-start your career after school.

    This is an amazing opportunity for students who have a keen interest in the electrical industry.
